CARING FOR OUR ELDERS: A STFC STORY
Lila Kumari Kasahi’s new house is located in Patipani, Nuwakot, a little way from the historical Sattale Durbar area. She currently lives there with her husband, whilst their only son works in the country’s capital — Kathmandu.
When the 2015 earthquake hit Nuwakot, Lila’s two stories house was destroyed. The upper floor was grounded. Shortly after the earthquake, with the help of neighbours and relatives, they managed to sort out the debris and build a shelter where they could sleep temporarily.
Lila had already finished her construction and received the two first reconstruction tranches when the STFC came to Nuwakot. Our STFC engineers engaged with the elderly couple during a monitoring visit and learned that they were still yet to process their request for the third tranche because they lacked the necessary documents. They found the process puzzling and unfortunately their son wasn’t able to help them due to the distance. Lila and her husband were at loss and didn’t know what the next step was.
The engineers quickly reassured them, told them that the STFC beneficiaries can benefit from tailored help, and provided as-built drawings for their house. They also helped them do the necessary to obtain the municipality report to have all the paperwork ready for the third tranche request. From there it was smooth sailing to receive her 3rd tranche thanks to the STFC.
